watch your tone.
Our muscles are dependent on our nerves. We all know that it requires the nervous system to contract our muscles, but even at rest, the muscles are still at work stabilizing the body, and keeping us all together.
That baseline tension is called tone. Tone varies from person to person and from one area of the body to another. Our habitual emotions and actions determine the tone of our muscles. Anxiety can push the muscles to tighten in an effort to combat the sense that things are going to fall apart at any moment.
Our entire emotional history is recorded in our flesh.
We are not controlled by our emotions, however. We can bring awareness to these muscular habits. Massage can bring that awareness quickly, directly, and precisely. It gives the opportunity to feel where we have been in holding patterns. It allows us to pause, reflect, and release. We can awaken our awareness to areas that need our attention, and inspire our consciousness to take a more active place in our bodies.
My work is not to fix, but to expand. We can allow our bodies to become more flexible, more resilient, more able to adapt to the changing needs of each moment.
